Korea was unified under the Silla dynasty in the 7th century. The country was ruled by the Joseon dynasty from the 14th century until its annexation by Japan in 1910. Following the Japanese surrender at the end of the Second World War, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel in 1948 and divided into the countries of North Korea and South Korea. These countries fought the Korean War between 1950 and 1953
