noun

Chiefly in Mexico and the south-western United States: an irrigation channel.
Origin
Early 19th century. From Spanish acequia irrigation channel (1113; also †azequia, †açequia, †asequia; many examples in early use show borrowing of the Spanish word into post-classical Latin) from Arabic al-sāqiya from al- the + sāqiya.
