noun
BotanyA plant of the tropical American bromeliad genus Aechmea, comprising predominantly epiphytic species with stiff, spiny leaves arranged in a basal rosette. Also (in form Aechmea): the genus itself.
Origin
Mid 19th century. From scientific Latin Aechmea, genus name from ancient Greek αἰχμή point of a spear, point (from the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian iešmas, Old Prussian aysmis spit) + scientific Latin -a; so called on account of the rigid points on the calyces.
