Late 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Philipot (d. 1682), poet and writer. From classical Latin aedicula small room, small house, small shrine, chapel, tomb, sepulchre from aedēs, aedis dwelling place, house, temple, sanctuary, shrine, tomb, sepulchre + -cula.
