Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Daniel Clarke (1769–1822), antiquary and mineralogist. From Arabic al-ḥamdu li-llāh, literally ‘the praise is to God’ from al the + ḥamdu, definite nominative of ḥamd praise + li for, to + allāh.
