Mid 19th century; earliest use found in British Florist. From scientific Latin allochrous or its etymon ancient Greek ἀλλόχροος (contracted ἀλλόχρους) changed in colour (from ἀλλο- + -χροος -coloured from χρώς colour from the same base as χρῶμα colour) + -ous.
