noun
A clinic providing outpatient treatment or primary care.
Originally used in German contexts, later often in relation to the Soviet Union. The term is not used of such clinics in the English-speaking world.
Origin
Mid 19th century. Probably from German Ambulatorium outpatients' department from post-classical Latin ambulatorium; use of the German word in the medical sense is probably after post-classical Latin clinicum ambulatorium.
