1930s; earliest use found in The New York Herald Tribune. From Anyang (Chinese Ānyáng), the name of a city in the Chinese province of Henan, near which the ruins of the Shang-dynasty city of Yin (Chinese Yīn, the type site for the Anyang period) are situated.
