Used attributively in allusion to an idealized type of man depicted in advertisements for ‘Arrow Collars’ and shirts in the early 20th century, as conventionally handsome, sophisticated, clean-cut, etc.; especially in "arrow collar man".
The images used in the highly successful advertising campaign beginning in 1907 until around 1931 for the ‘Arrow Collar’ (manufactured by N.Y. company Cluett, Peabody & Co.) were created by U.S. artist J. C. Leyendecker.
