Formerly an order within the class Scyphozoa, the group is now categorized as the class Cubozoa.
Late 19th century; earliest use found in American Naturalist. From scientific Latin Cubomedusae (HaeckelDas System der Medusen 423, noting earlier (apparently unpublished) use in 1877) from post-classical Latin cubus + scientific Latin Medusa.
