Meaning of energy-dispersive in English:

  • Designating an instrument which is able to detect and measure the energy spectrum of X-rays emitted by a sample; (also) designating techniques in which the detection and measurement of an X-ray energy spectrum is used to analyse the composition of a sample.

Such techniques rely upon the characteristic relationship between the composition of a material and the energy spectrum of the X-rays it emits when stimulated by a given source of excitation, such as when bombarded by high-energy electrons in a scanning electron microscope.

1970s; earliest use found in Science.
