  • In a human or other vertebrate: either of the two regions of the upper abdomen located beneath the ribs on either side of the epigastrium.

    The hypochondria are the sites of the liver and spleen, and were of particular interest to medical practitioners when these organs were believed to be the source of black bile (melancholia).
