He first gained recognition for The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1972), but is probably best known for his Booker Prize-winning novel Schindler's Ark (1982), the true story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who helped more than 1,200 Jewish people escape death in Nazi concentration camps, filmed by Steven Spielberg in 1993 as Schindler's List.
