A psoralen derivative that occurs naturally in bullwort, Ammi majus, and various other plants, and that is used as an oral or topical photosensitizing agent in the photochemotherapy of psoriasis, vitiligo, and certain cutaneous neoplasms; 8-methoxypsoralen, C₁₂ H₈ O₄.
1950s; earliest use found in Journal of the American Medical Association. Shortened from methoxypsoralen (in the systematic name of the compound) from methoxy- + psoralen.
