historical A weapon consisting of a heavy ball set with spikes, either forming the head of a club, as in a mace, or attached by a chain to a handle, as in a flail.
Origin
Mid 17th century. From German Morgenstern, in this sense after Danish morgenstjerne in similar application, the spikes on the weapon being compared to the rays of the star.
