Early 17th century; earliest use found in Philemon Holland (1552–1637), translator. From post-classical Latin onopordon cotton thistle (alternative reading in early editions of Pliny for onopradon) from ancient Greek ὀνόπορδον from ὄνος ass + πορδή breaking wind from πέρδεσθαι to break wind.
