Origin
Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Fuller (1607/8–1661), Church of England clergyman. From Pisgah (biblical Hebrew Piṣgāh), literally ‘peak, height, cliff’, the name of the peak of Mount Nebo, from which Moses saw the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 3:27).
