Either of two tropical African lianas of the family Apocynaceae that bear fruits resembling the persimmon, Landolphia dulcis (more fully "sweet pishamin", "sweet pishamin-tree") and L. acida (more fully "sour pishamin-tree").
Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Loudon (1783–1843), landscape gardener and horticultural writer. Variant of persimmon.
