A genus of herbivorous prosauropod dinosaurs of the late Triassic and early Jurassic, being predominantly quadrupedal and comparatively short-legged, with a long neck and tail; (also plateosaurus) a dinosaur of this genus.
Mid 19th century. From scientific Latin Plateosaurus, genus name from ancient Greek πλάτη flat or broad object (from the base of πλατύς) + -o- + -saurus.
