Either of two Australian frogs of the genus Limnodynastes (family Myobatrachidae) having a loud, twang-like, single-note call: L. dorsalis of western Australia and L. dumerili of south-east Australia and Tasmania.
Origin
1960s. Imitative; perhaps influenced by English regional (Berkshire) pobble the noise made by water bubbling as it starts to boil and bonk.
