Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Geoffrey Fenton (c1539–1608), translator and administrator in Ireland. Partly from Middle French pudicité modesty, chastity, behaviour which shows a sense of shame, and partly from classical Latin pudīcitia sexual purity, chastity from pudīcus + -itia.
