1A bias towards oneself; predisposition to favour oneself or one's own views, or to pursue one's own advantage.
In a thermionic valve: bias generated by means of a resistor placed between the cathode and the ground, rather than by external circuit component. In later use also: (in a transistor) bias generated within the transistor itself, rather than by an external circuit component.
Mid 17th century. From self- + bias.
