adjective
rareAllowing light to shine through; translucent, transparent.
Origin
Old English; earliest use found in Antwerp-London Glossary. Originally from through- + Old English scīne (not otherwise attested), cognate with Middle Dutch schijn, Old Saxon skīn (Middle Low German schīn), Old High German skīn (Middle High German schīn), all in sense ‘visible, manifest, plain, evident’, representing an adjectival derivative of the Germanic base of shine.
