Any of various bulbous plants of the genus Zephyranthes (family Amaryllidaceae), native to the warmer regions of the Americas and widely cultivated as ornamentals, having pink, yellow, or white solitary flowers on slender stalks; a zephyr lily. Also (in form Zephyranthes): the genus itself.
Early 19th century; earliest use found in William Herbert (1772–1851), antiquary and librarian. From scientific Latin Zephyranthes, genus name from ancient Greek ζέϕυρος + ἄνθος flower.
