The name of a family of Italian violin-makers from Cremona. In the 16th and 17th centuries, three generations, including Andrea (c.1520–80), his sons Antonio (1550–1638) and Girolamo (1551–1635), and the latter's son Nicolò (1596–1684), developed the basic proportions of the violin, viola, and cello.
