  • A particular form of photoengraving in which a special carbon tissue is used.

    The process was patented by J. R. Sawyer in 1885, but he does not use the word autogravure in the patent (Brit. Patent 14,855).

Late 19th century; earliest use found in The Athenaeum. From auto- + either -gravure or French gravure gravure.
