A sample is placed in a bottle with a long, narrow, graduated neck, treated with sulphuric acid to dissolve the solids, and then centrifuged and diluted several times so that the fat separates and rises to the top of the bottle; relating to or involving this method.

Late 19th century. From the name of Stephen Moulton Babcock, U.S. research chemist, who introduced this method of testing.
