Definition of bakfiets in English:

Pronunciation /ˈbakfiːts/

  • Originally in the Netherlands: a type of bicycle or tricycle with a large open or enclosed box mounted low behind the front wheel and in front of the rider, originally used by tradespeople to carry cargo, but now used (especially by parents) to travel with small children.

1950s. From Dutch bakfiets from bak kind of open box or container + fiets bicycle, of uncertain origin, perhaps from a regional (southern Limburg) verb vietse to run fast, perhaps ultimately from French vite fast.
