A flesh fly of semi-desert regions in southern Africa, Wohlfahrtia pachytyli (family Sarcophagidae), which sometimes deposits its larvae as parasites on the brown locust (Locustana pardalina). More usually called locust fly.
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Robert Wallace (1853–1939). From Afrikaans brommer blowfly, bluebottle + fly.
