  • (circa 1496–1542), Spanish soldier and explorer. After serving as military commander of Nicaragua and of Peru, he landed in Florida in 1539 and explored much of what is now the southeastern US, as far west as Oklahoma. He died of a fever on the banks of the Mississippi River.
