1940s; earliest use found in The New York Times. From modern Greek ΕΛΑΣ, initialism from the initial letters of Ελληνικός Λαϊκός Απελευθερωτικός Στρατός, lit. ‘Greek people's liberating army’ (the first letter is also sometimes interpreted as representing εθνικός national).
