Definition of empholite in English:

empholite

noun

rareMineralogy
  • A mineral consisting of hydrated aluminium oxide (subsequently identified with diaspore).

Origin

Late 19th century; earliest use found in American Journal of Science. From French empholite from Hellenistic Greek ἐμϕωλεύειν to lurk in (from ἐμ-, variant (before a labial) of ἐν- + ancient Greek ϕωλεύειν to lurk in a hole or den from ϕωλεός den, lair, hole) + French -ite; so called on account of the difficulty of spotting the mineral because of its small size and its colour, similar to that of the surrounding rock.
