  • (More fully "large blue butterfly") a Eurasian lycaenid butterfly, Maculinea arion, having blue wings marked with black spots, whose larvae first feed on wild thyme or marjoram and then enter the nests of red ants of the genus Myrmica (especially M. sabuleti) to prey on the ant larvae.

    The large blue became extinct in Britain in 1979 but has since been successfully reintroduced.
