Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in William Jardine (1800–1874), naturalist. From scientific Latin Lates, genus name from ancient Greek λάτος Nile perch (goes to Arabic lāṭis); further etymology uncertain (an Ancient Egyptian origin has sometimes been suggested).
