    Muneyoshi (also known as Sōetsu) Yanagi introduced the concept of mingei in an attempt to preserve traditional handicraft methods in the face of industrialization and mass production.


1950s; earliest use found in Monumenta Nipponica. From Japanese mingei from min- people + -gei arts and crafts (both from Middle Chinese), probably as a shortening of a longer phrase.
