Definition of Miniconjou in English:

Pronunciation /mɪnɪˈkɒndʒuː/

  • A member of a division of the Teton Sioux people, inhabiting the Cheyenne River area of western South Dakota. Frequently attributive, especially in "Miniconjou Sioux".

Early 19th century; earliest use found in William Clark (1770–1838). From Santee and Teton Sioux mnik hóʔožu (also Teton Sioux mnikhówožu), of unknown origin (frequently interpreted by folk etymology (within Sioux) as from Santee Sioux mínikhąyewožu, lit. ‘plant(ers) near the water’).
