Any of several trees of the genus Brachystegia (family Caesalpiniaceae (Leguminosae)) of tropical Africa. Also: open woodland dominated by these and related trees, especially in Tanzania.
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in James A. Grant (1827–1892), explorer in Africa. From Swahili myombo, muyombo from Nyamwezi myombo (plural miombo).
