Origin

Late 19th century. From Russian regional (Siberia) mirjačit (also transliterated miryachit), 3rd person singular of mirjačit′ to have the falling sickness, lit. ‘to be possessed by an evil spirit’ from mirjak evil spirit, later extended to mean ‘person with miryachit’.
