Early 19th century; earliest use found in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. From scientific Latin Myxine, apparently (with alteration of the ending) from Hellenistic Greek μυξῖνος slime-fish from ancient Greek μύξα mucus + -ῖνος, suffix forming nouns.
