A member of a North American Indian people formerly inhabiting the west side of the San Francisco Peninsula of California, one of several groups speaking Ramaytush (San Francisco Costanoan). Also (more generally and in later use): a member or descendant of any of the Costanoan-speaking peoples; the Costanoan language family or its extinct component languages collectively.
The more general use dates from the 1960s.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Frederick Beechey (1796–1856), naval officer and hydrographer. From Spanish Oljones, plural from Ramaytush (San Francisco Costanoan) 'olxon tribelet on the west side of the San Francisco Peninsula.
