A series of unsaturated aliphatic acids of the general formula Cₙ H₂ₙ₋₁ COOH, in which there is a chain of carbon atoms containing one double bond.
The first acids of the series are acrylic (propenoic) acid, crotonic (butenoic) acid, and angelic and tiglic acids (pentenoic acids).
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Henry Watts (1815–1884), chemist.
