Infection of humans and various other animals with parasitic trematode worms (liver flukes) of the genus Opisthorchis (family Opisthorchiidae), especially O. felineus and O. viverrini, endemic in parts of south-east and central Asia and eastern Europe, typically resulting in inflammation and scarring of the biliary tract and liver.
Early 20th century; earliest use found in Osler's Modern Medicine. From scientific Latin Opisthorchis, genus name + -iasis, after German Opisthorchiosis.
