An extinct hominid, Orrorin tugenensis, known from late Miocene fossil remains found in the Tugen Hills of Kenya, and dated to between 6.2 and 5.6 million years ago.
The status of Orrorin is controversial; some believe it to have been bipedal and the earliest hominin in the human line.
Early 21st century. From scientific Latin Orrorin, genus name, according to Senut from a Kalenjin (Tugen) word meaning ‘original man’, but this has not been traced. Perhaps compare Kalenjin (Tugen) arrorin speaker of the Arror variety of Tugen, area where this is spoken, also person who gives directions.
