Late 17th century; earliest use found in John Phillips (1631–?1706), writer. From Hindi pālkī (in southern vernacular languages of South Asia without ellision of the medial vowel, as pālakī) palanquin, litter, conveyance carried on the shoulders from Sanskrit palyaṅka.
