Late 19th century; earliest use found in Alfred Cave (1847–1900), Congregational minister. From German Pisteologie from ancient Greek πίστις faith (from the Indo-European base of classical Latin fidēs faith + the Indo-European base of ancient Greek -τις see -sis) + -logie.
