Any of various extinct gibbon-like apes of the genus Pliopithecus, known from Miocene fossil remains found in several European countries, and dated to between 16 and 10 million years ago.
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in J. Beete Jukes (1811–1869), geologist. From scientific Latin Pliopithecus, genus name from plio- + -pithecus (fossil) ape, specific use of classical Latin -pithēcus monkey (in cercopithēcus).
