Popper, Sir Karl Raimund

(1902–94), Austrian-born British philosopher. In The Logic of Scientific Discovery (1934) he argued that scientific hypotheses can never be finally confirmed as true, but are tested by attempts to falsify them. In The Open Society and its Enemies (1945) he criticized the historicist social theories of Plato, Hegel, and Marx.
