  • A rare, sporadic disorder with highly variable manifestations in which there is overgrowth of bone and soft tissues, often asymmetrical and typically resulting in enlargement of the head, hands, or feet and the occurrence of multiple soft tissue tumours and vascular malformations.

    Proteus syndrome is considered to be a possible explanation for the deformities exhibited by Joseph Merrick (1862–90), the Elephant Man.
