  • The aquatic plant Nelumbo nucifera (family Nelumbonaceae) of tropical Asia and Australia, with large, emergent pink or white flowers and edible seeds; (also) any of several similar plants of the genus Nymphaea (family Nymphaeaceae) (now rare).

    The sacred lotus is a divine symbol in both Buddhism and Hinduism.
