Origin

Late 18th century; earliest use found in Asiatick Researches. From Sanskrit sundarī, use as noun of the feminine of sundara beautiful, handsome, variant of (earlier) sūnara handsome, ultimately from the Indo-European base of su- good + the Indo-European base of nṛ man, hero.
